Richard Stockton (1824-1876)

Richard Stockton, eldest son of Commodore Robert Field Stockton and Harriet Maria (Potter) Stockton, inherited Morven by his father's will. But the Commodore had no money left to leave to his sons, (having gone through two large fortunes in his colorful lifetime), so Richard could not afford to keep up the lovely old home, and after selling the horses, livestock and other items, sold Morven to his cousin, Major Samuel Witham Stockton. Richard moved to "Springdale," in Princeton, where he had in fact been living since marriage in 1851. Mr. Stockton was a lawyer, and treasurer of the Camden and Amboy Railroad for many years. He was a Democrat and an Episcopalian. He married first on April 22, 1851 Caroline Bayard Dod, who was born at "Cleremont", Princeton, December 3, 1832, and died March 22, 1859. He married second, October 4, 1860 Susan Bratford Dod (sister of his first wife), born (at Cleremont) January 5, 1840, died --? Richard Stockton had five children by his first wife, and seven children by his second. He died at "Springdale", April 5, 1876.
