Stockton Cousins Seeking Their Links

Everything I know about Genealogy is already on my Web Page of the Stockton Family of Princeton Genealogy, and I am confident that you are all light years ahead of me when it comes to doing Genealogy Research; therefore, if you have information regarding its accuracy, extending it, or any other comments, complaints, etc, please email me.

There are many Stockton Cousins seeking information about their relatives, and I will be happy to post same here along with others' answers given the usual space limitations and other disclaimers as to accuracy, etc, that you might otherwise expect to find on a lawyer's page. In other words, if its wrong, don't sue me because you'll only give yourself a headache.

With the foregoing understandings in mind, please provide any information or help to the following queries:

Leonard Campbell
168 Old Center Harbor Rd
PO Box 972
Center Harbor, NH 03226
Email
Leonard is looking for information on his ancestor, Mathilda (Martha) Stockton who married Samual Montgomery Updike probably in Princeton, NJ. Samual Montgomery Updike was born in 1816 and died in 1878 in Princeton, NJ (Source: The Opdyck Genealogy).

They had two children, Helen and Elias Mulford. Helen married an Owen, and Leonard Campbell is descended from them. Mathilda (Martha) Stockton was a cousin of Richard Stockton, the Signer. Both Leonard Campbell and I would be interested in any connections anyone else might know of or where any records might be saved.

Mary Francis
Email
Mary is looking for information on her ancestor, Ann Hoag Witham Willson, mother of Susannah Witham Robinson Willson, who was her 7th Great Grandmother. Mary Francis is also looking for any information on either the Willson family or the Witham family in England. She would like to find at least one generation in England before Robert Willson. Any clue will be appreciated.

Susan Canton
Email
Susan is trying to find any thread possible to a Stockton ancestor. His name was Peter Copeland Stockton. The records that she has show that he was born in 1785 at Snow Creek, Franklin County, Virginia. He died on July 10, 1855. He was married to Sarah Lewis Wingfield on June 11, 1812. His daughter, Sallie Stockton, was born on December 27, 1817. Sallie was Susan's great great grandmother. She has found that sone of the information in the material that she has isn't correct or is disputed, so dates or locations may be different from other sources. She would appreciate any information that you might share on tracking this line.

Cliff Luxion
Email
Has information about his Stockton Line that descends through New Hope, PA in the 1800's from the "original?" Richard Stockton of Flushing as an ancestor. Cliff knows of a number of storehouses of Stockton data of single lines of descent which pick up where the early 1900 works end. He and his wife are willing to share research of these lines in order to update the published ancestry in order to preserve history.

Diane Smith
Email
Diane Smith is seeking info on a James Stockton b. about 1828 in Connecticut. Both his parents were also born in Connecticut. James Stockton moved to Michigan in about 1864. He was married to a Lucy A. Stockton who was b. in England in 1848. James and Lucy A. Stockton are listed on the 1880 Newago Co., MI Census and also on the 1894 Montcalm Co., MI Census. Any help would be appreciated.

Brenda Scoby Nikirk
Email
Brenda's mother is her connection to the Stockton family. Her name is Hattie Erline Stockton Scoby Shelby. She was born in Dunklin County, Mo. October 24, 1928. Her father was Uell Andrew Stockton , born 1908 in Dunklin County, Mo. He married Julia Pool. Uell's father was Joseph Francis, born August 27, 1877 in Wayne County, Mo. He married Mary Jane McArley Griggs in 1901. Joseph's father was Andrew J. Stockton born most likely (according to some census records) in Alabama. He was born April 1, 1845 (according to cemetery records). Family tradition says that he was probably born in Jackson County, Alabama, in the Paint Rock Area. She has found what she believes to be him in that area's census for 1850 & 1860 living with the John Shell family. The Shell's lived near E.J. Stockton, but she is unable to find the parents or the link for Andrew J. Stockton. There is another Andrew J. Stockton from another area of Missouri, but no clue to our line. Andrew J. married Mary Lucinda Malloy from Wayne County, Mo. If you have any information that might lead Brenda to her great-great-great grandparents, she would certainly appreciate it.

 Mitzi Tira (Stockton) Alvar
Email
Tira has been told all her life that she is related to Richard Stockton ( The Signer). However, she isn't sure how true that is . Her family is from Big Spring, Texas. She thinks that they moved from Virgina in the early 1800's. Is "The Signer" related to the Richard Stockton who died at the Alamo? She is new at this and would like to find out as much as she can and she doesn't even know where to start.

You might want to check out these web sites:

The Itawamba County Historical Society

They have a good site with some good information including marriage records, census information, etc.

The East Tennessee Historical Center
There is little online information at the site, but there is information on how to
contact them. The center is in Knoxville TN which is near Stockton Valley in Loudon
County where a lot of Stocktons who moved to Itawamba County and Monroe County MS were originally from (in some cases via KY and AL).

There is a very rare book, "Davis Stockton of Virginia" by Leona Johnson and Winfred
Smith that was published in 1972. Although I have yet to actually see it, I understand it has a lot of information about southern Stockton families. Copies are in The Clayton Library in Houston TX, the DAR Library, the Library of Virginia, and the Fort Worth Library. If you are near any of these locations, you might give them a try. I have requested the book through an inter-library exchange via my local library.

And of course, you should check your local Family History Center sponsored by The
Church of Later Day Saints (The Mormons).

I hope this was helpful!
