Information on Martha Chapman Allen Arnold

Here is the info that I have on Martha CHAPMAN ALLEN ARNOLD, mother of Rachel ALLEN, who married Thomas STOCKTON. I believe that Rachel was STEP-daughter of Samuel ARNOLD & that she was d/o Samuel ALLEN, 1st husband of Martha CHAPMAN. Sam'l. ALLEN died in 1733 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., N.J. I would appreciate any additional data on him & am willing to be corrected if someone knows something I don't! These notes relate to the movements of Martha CHAPMAN as well as to the confusion over her use of the word "son" & in that instance are confirmation for the explanation Kathie posted.

_Stocktons of Grove Dale, Maries Co., MO_ by Jean Stockton Mitchell, 1994. p.27:
"The CHAPMAN family (Martha was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca Chapman) lived in Chesterfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, when Davis Stockton's family lived in N.J. Rachel was born in Burlington Co, the dau. of Martha and her first husband, Samuel ALLEN. Martha reappeared in Lancaster Co., Pa, again a neighbor of the STOCKTON fx., but now as Martha ARNOLD, wife of Samuel Arnold. Martha and Samuel Arnold next appeared with a 200-acre patent "On the branches of Ivy Creek" (Patent Book 22, p. 42), in 1743, and were neighbors once more of the STOCKTON fx., this third time in Albemarle Co., Va. However, by the time Martha Chapman Allen Arnold arrived in Albemarle Co, she was greeted not only by friends, but by her dau., Rachel, a son-in-law, Thomas STOCKTON, and a grandson, Newberry Stockton. Martha and Samuel ARNOLD continued to live in Albemarle Co, adding more land to their plantation, until Samuel died in 1765. Then "Robert Gentry bought in 1766, from Martha, widow of Samuel ARNOLD, a place on the head waters of Ivy Creek." At that point Martha probably moved into the household of one of her children, perhaps Rachel."
p. 28 same source:
"...the likelihood is that Thos. (2) STOCKTON was born nearer to 1720 than to 1710, was married about 1740 or 41, and his marriage to Rachel had perhaps induced Samuel and Martha, whose first Albemarle Co. land was patented in 1743, to follow their dau. to Va."
p. 18 same source:
21 Jul 1742 Goochland C. Road Orders: James Martin is appointed Surveyor of the road from Morrison's to Davis STOCKDON's (sic), and Samuel ARNOLD from thence to the D.S. tree. MY NOTE- I believe this places Martha & Sam'l in Albemarle Co. before the above mentioned 200 ac. patent of 1743.
p. 19 same source has affidavit of Martha Arnold in 1765 appointing Thos. Stockton to represent her interests:
"...Martha Arnold, widow of Samuel Arnold, deceased, of Albemarle Co., Colony & Dominion of Va., aged seventy-three years last March and born of Rebecca, wife of Robert Chapman, late of the Township of Chesterfield and Burlington Province, West Jersey, do appoint my trusty friend and loved son Thomas Stockton, my true and lawful attorney, to demand recover and receive from the heirs, executors and trustees of the said Robert Chapman, wheresoever residing all and every parcel of the gifts, legacies, either in money, goods, or chattels, which the said Robert Cahpman bequethed and left me." (Book A, p139, Albemarle Co, Va, 1765)
source goes on to say that from this affidavit and Martha's reference therein to Thomas 2 Stockton as her "loved son", Rev. Edgar Woods, in his Hist. of Alb. came to erroneous conclusion that Martha had become wife of Davis Stockton. Obviously Martha considered Thomas, as the husband of her daughter Rachel, to be her "son."

Hope this is useful...Regards, Barbara Abate beeezeee@aol.com
