The following which I shall send in 3 parts is from the large collection of data in the Mary Shields Shore Collection in the McClung Historical Collection in Knoxville, TN. I hope that this will generate discussion, and additional information about these and other Stockton families.

This document was compiled by Mary Shields Shore.

The purpose of this compilation is to identify the JOHN STOCKTON (of Albemarle Co., Va.), who signed the Albemarle County Declaration of Independence, 21 April 1779.
There are many differing and confusing statements concerning the STOCKTON family of Albe. Co., Va. Davis Stockton (b. ca. 1680/90: died 1760) with wife, Sarah ( maiden name unknown) were, with others, "early" pioneer settlers" in this area of Virginia.
In HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE CO., VA, by Rev. Edgar Woods, published by The Green Bookman, Bridgewater, Va. (1932), it is stated that, after Sarah's (his wife), Davis Stockton married Martha Amold, widow of Samuel Amold, a neighbor of the Stockton family. Since Davis Stockton is on the Necrology List of Albemarle Co. as deceased 1760 and the will of Samuel Arnold was probated, same Co., this statement is obviously erroneous.
This statement was caused, in part, from the fact that Rachel, daughter of Samuel and Martha Chapman Amold, married Thomas, son of Davis and Sarah ( ) Stockton.
Martha CHAPMAN Arnold (wife of Samuel) was the daughter of Robert Chapman and wife, Rebecca, of Chesterfield Twp., Burlington Co., New Jersey. When Robert Chapman died ca. 1747, N. J. Martha, who was mentioned in her father's will, gave a Power of Attorney to Thomas Stockton, her SON-IN-LAW, addressed to "Beloved SON and friend", empowering Thomas to go and collect her share of Robert Chapman's estate. This term, "SON", was not used ambiguously: It denoted Thomas Stockton, husband of her daughter, Rachel, a son-in-law of whom. she was fond.
There have been varied accounts on the children of Davis and Sarah ( ) Stockton. As a descendant and researcher on this family, the compiler has established sufficient evidence to feel confident that the following names were sons and daughters of this couple: ( Order of birth unknown):

Richard Stockton married Agnes A. ( maiden name unknown)

After Davis1 Stockton's death, 1760, all his CHILDREN EXCEPT FOR TWO SONS . . . RICHARD AND THOMAS, were selling out and leaving Albe. Co.

The sons . . . . Richard 2 and Thomas 2 Stockton, had sons named John 3.

John Stockton 3, son of Richard 2, and wife, Mary ( "Polly") Morton , were on record in Pittsylvania Co, Va. as early as 24 August 1775, when Thomas Harget of Pitts. Co. granted Power-of-Attorney to John Stockton of same Co. ( Index to Wills & Deeds, 1767-1848, ...microfilm...Vol. 4, p. 157).
Then on 26 November 1777, John Davis of Henry Co., Va. sold to John Stockton of Pitts. Co., Va. 500 acres (being in the Commonwealth of Va. and lying on Turkey Cock Creek), in consideration of 250 pounds "current money". This indenture was witnessed by: Thomas Harget; Elysbeth Hargit; and James Johnston (?). ( Pitts. Co . , Va. Deed and Wills, 1767- 1780. Vol 5, p. 2 microfilm.)
From these dates on, there are many land acquisitions and transactions on Pittsylvania Co. records up until Mary Stockton, on 21 October 11. is signing alone. We can assume John 3 Stockton, son of Richard 2, died prior to that date. Pittsylvania Co. , Va. records as well as those of Cumberland Co., Ky. have data on the settlement and heirs of his estate. Widow, Mary Stockton, and children moved to Cumberland Co., Ky. ( Burkesville) after husband¹ s death. She and John Stockton had the following children: Peter H. 4 ( Harget; Hargard; Haggard?)
